In winter you can ski from late November to early May, and the high-altitude snow then holds until the end of May. Even if you don't ski, going up to 3,200 m as a pedestrian is well worth it for the views of La Meije and the Écrins.
- Summer
- High-altitude / glacier skiing 2027: spring skiing announced from 3 to 30 May, then the glacier is reserved first for professional groups and clubs until 4 July (check public access and opening times on les2alpes.com; in 2026 the glacier was open from 8am to 12.30pm, morning skiing only).

Les 2 Alpes tourist office (Maison des 2 Alpes), 4 Place des 2 Alpes, 38860 Les Deux Alpes

Open to walkers, skiers and mountain bikers in both summer and winter, it's the easiest way up to the resort from Le Bourg-d'Oisans, with no hairpin road and no parking hassle. At the top you'll find the foot of the slopes, the trails and the terraces of the Alpe de Venosc; at the bottom, the village's lanes of craft workshops and, in summer, the Tuesday morning market.

Bottom station: in the heart of Venosc village, next to the tourist information office (355 route de Bourg), Les Deux Alpes, 38520 Venosc. Bottom station GPS: 44.9876, 6.1161. The road runs along the lake and climbs steeply, in the shade of the trees, to Le Rivier d'Allemond. A short descent, then the Maupas straight, the hardest part of the day. Past the Grand'Maison dam, you climb in the open through the high pastures, pass close to the Col du Glandon and finish at 2,067 m, beside the iron cross that gives the col its name, facing the Aiguilles d'Arves. Long and irregular, it's a true hors catégorie climb.
- Hors catégorie, in the Tour de France since 1947
- 2026 Tour: Carapaz first over the top, on a stage starting in Bourg d'Oisans

- Road rideable from June to October, weather permitting.
- Winter
- Closed in winter · reopens in June
Set off early with two bottles: there's water at Allemond, Le Rivier d'Allemond and the col, but the top section is in full sun. On the way back, the Maupas descent is steep and tight, and there's a short climb back up towards Le Rivier before you drop down to Allemond.
About 6 km on the D1091, the Grenoble road, which is very busy in summer (lorries, motorhomes). The Oisans greenway also reaches Allemond, but its route changed after the 2024 storms: check with the tourist office that it's open. The D526 is closed in winter on the Isère side (it reopened on 29 May in 2026), and the road may be closed on the morning of some events, such as the Marmotte in late June.

The big classic from the lodge, and a proper day on the bike. You follow the Romanche up the D1091: the Commères ramp, the Chambon dam, then the long drag up to La Grave, at the foot of La Meije and its glaciers. At the Col du Lautaret (2,058 m), turn left for the final 8.5 kilometres, the steepest of the day. The summit tunnel is closed to bikes, so you ride past the Henri Desgrange monument and finish on the real col, at 2,642 m, first crossed by the Tour de France in 1911.

Allow a big day, 96 km there and back: set off early, eat regularly and refill your bottles at La Grave or the Lautaret. Keep a windproof for the descent, as it gets cold quickly up there, even in summer.
The D1091 is the main Grenoble-Briançon road: heavy traffic in summer, lorries included. You ride through around ten tunnels (Commères, Infernet, the long Chambon tunnel, Grand Clos, Serre du Coin, Ardoisières...), so front and rear lights on and bright clothing, even in the lit tunnels. The long Chambon tunnel has been open again since December 2017 and no cycling ban is reported there in 2026. At the Commères and Infernet tunnels, roadworks run until 30 October 2026: alternating traffic and a few full closures, including on 30 October from 9am to 3pm. The 2027 schedule has not been published yet. The Galibier tunnel is closed to bikes. The col is closed in winter, usually from mid or late October to late May or June depending on the snow: check it's open before you set off.

Col de Sarenne: 12.8 km averaging 7.5%, 13.5% at its steepest, 954 m of elevation gain from the Chambon dam. The full loop is 52 km with 1,705 m of elevation gain.
Time and power estimated for a 75 kg rider at 220 W, climbing without stopping. Route from OpenStreetMap, altitudes from Copernicus.
From Le Cosy Lodge, take the D1091 and the Commères ramp up to the Chambon dam. That's where the real climb begins: 12.8 km averaging 7.5%, with a first kilometre at 11.5% up to Mizoën, then the hamlets of Clavans and a string of hairpins to the Col de Sarenne, at 1,999 m. This is the side the 2026 Tour de France rated hors catégorie. A narrow road with hardly any cars, between the Grandes Rousses and the Plateau d'Emparis. Over the top, the pastoral road plunges down to the Sarenne bridge, a short climb takes you to the Alpe d'Huez altiport, then the 21 hairpins bring you back down to Le Bourg-d'Oisans.

Set off with two full bottles: after Clavans-le-Haut there's no real village until Alpe d'Huez, and the mountain hut at the col only serves food in high season. Best to leave early for cooler air and calmer traffic on the D1091, with a windproof in your pocket for the col.
Four tunnels on the D1091 up to the dam, including the Commères, the longest (about 400 m): switch on your front and rear lights, and stay alert to the traffic on this Grenoble-Briançon route, which is busy in summer. After the col, the pastoral road on the Alpe d'Huez side is narrow and bumpy, with no crash barriers, a few fords and a 20 km/h limit: take the descent slowly, and watch out for gravel along the whole Sarenne section. Safety works on the D1091 near the Commères and Infernet tunnels until 30 October 2026, with alternating traffic and occasional closures (details on itinisere.fr). Nothing announced for 2027 so far.

Time and power estimated for a 75 kg rider at 220 W, climbing without stopping. Route from OpenStreetMap, altitudes from Copernicus.
Leave Bourg-d'Oisans on the D1091 and head up the Romanche valley: the Commères ramp, a short descent towards Le Freney-d'Oisans, then the climb back up to the Chambon dam, with four lit tunnels along the way. At the dam, turn right onto the D213 and the real climb begins, on a wide road with numbered hairpins, just like Alpe d'Huez. A flatter stretch at Mont-de-Lans, Lac du Chambon below, then the resort. Marco Pantani won the Tour stage here in 1998, Santiago Botero in 2002.

Set off early, before the traffic builds on the D1091 and the D213, with a bright gilet and a rear light for the tunnels. For the way down, the tourist office suggests the minor road via Bons and Le Ponteil, quieter but narrow and rough in places; otherwise, take the D213 back down.
Four lit tunnels on the D1091 between Le Clapier and the dam (Commères, Infernet, Clos du Freney and Chambon dam), so make sure you're clearly visible. Heavy summer traffic on the D1091, the Grenoble-Briançon route, and on the D213. Safety works near the Commères and Infernet tunnels until 30 October 2026: alternating traffic, and a full closure on 30 October from 9am to 3pm between Le Clapier and Rivoire. A short but punchy ride, perfect for a morning. From the lodge, you cruise almost on the flat along the Oisans greenway to Allemond, then the road crosses the Verney dam and follows the turquoise lake. At the hamlet of Le Verney, the D43a kicks up straight away: just over 4 km at around 9%, in hairpins, with the lake dropping further and further below. Vaujany has hosted finishes of the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Grande Boucle Féminine. Take a break in the village, at the foot of the cable car, then return the same way.
- 13 Grande Boucle Féminine finishes between 1992 and 2005

In high summer, ride in the morning to avoid the heat. There's a drinking water tap in the centre of Vaujany, near the cable car, and the hairpin descent calls for care, especially when the road is wet.
The greenway is shared with walkers and families, so take it easy. Its route was changed in places after the storms of summer 2024, so check its condition on bike-oisans.com. On the D526 and the D43a, you share the road with cars heading up to the resort. A traffic order from the Isère department regulates the D526 between Allemond and Vaujany (extended in May 2026): check the Isère road information before you set off. No tunnels on the route.

The Col d'Ornon is the ideal ride to get the legs going. Leave town on the Grenoble road, turn left at La Paute and head up the Lignarre valley on the D526. A quiet road, between cliffs, forests and hamlets. The gradient is irregular, with a few flatter sections up to the Pont des Oulles, then it gets harder over the last five kilometres. At the top, at 1,371 m, you tip over towards the Valbonnais. The Tour de France has crossed it nine times since 1966, most recently in 2026 on the Gap-Alpe d'Huez stage.

A good ride early or late in the season: unlike the big cols nearby, the road doesn't close in winter. Take a windproof for the descent, which follows the same road.
No tunnels. The stretch of just under a kilometre on the D1091 to La Paute is busy, lorries included: keep well to the right, both ways. Since 2022, the Isère department has been making the D526 safer section by section (bridges, retaining walls), sometimes with weekday closures. Have a quick look at Itinisère before you set off.
